What Vaccinations Should you get Before you go on a Trip?
If you’re planning a winter getaway this year, don’t forget to get your vaccinations before you go. There isn’t a single vaccination that’s a magic bullet for every destination in the world. Each region has its own preventable illnesses. Your pharmacist can help to make sure that you’re well protected before you head off.
There are three types of vaccinations:
Routine – these are the standard vaccinations that most Canadians get as they grow up. Standard vaccinations include tetanus, pertussis, and diphtheria. You probably already have these but if it’s time for a booster, get it before you go on your trip.
Recommended – depending on where you are travelling, there could be one or more recommended vaccinations. The vaccinations that you get could also be affected by how you will be travelling and where you will be staying. A person living in the lap of luxury in a five star resort might require different vaccinations than someone who is backpacking, staying in a tent, and eating at market stalls. Recommended vaccinations protect you from diseases for which there is an intermediate to high risk in the area you will be travelling to.
Required – in order to travel to some countries you must be vaccinated against certain diseases. One example is Yellow Fever which is endemic to many parts of Africa and South America.
There are several travel related and potentially life threatening illnesses that can be prevented with a vaccination, including:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid Fever
- Yellow Fever
- Japanese Encephalitis
If you’re taking a trip to a foreign destination this winter or at any time of the year, talk to a travel doctor and your pharmacist to ensure that you will enjoy a healthy, happy vacation without unpleasant surprises when you get home.
